You must have noticed the winter sale season going on these days. Hang Ten is giving 50% off. Nike is doing better at 60%. Sheikh’s Mall is beating both of them with 70%. But no one, I repeat, no one, is able to beat the Lion King and his pack of hyenas. They have put up a sale that will be unbeatable until the dooms day. Pakistan is for sale. At 100% discount. Only the preferred buyer allowed.

And this preferred buyer?

Thanks to Jehan Ara’s “Wake up call“, I get to read a beautifully written post on the Emergency in Pakistan and the struggle that is needed of us.

Here is a quote from the post.

Today, at the most critical juncture that this country has seen in its turbulent history for decades, we have an opportunity – maybe our last – to change all of that. Today, we have the chance to salvage our country’s future, to save it from destruction, to save it from the very apathy that threatens to devour it whole.

Why are we protesting, people ask me? To usher in another corrupt politician? To open the doors for another dynastic arrangement that exploits whatever’s left of this tattered nation? What are we fighting for?

To them, I extend one simple answer; we are fighting for Pakistan.

Enlightened Moderation

The TV channel that airs the show calls it “the meanest chat show on tv”. Ali Saleem, the host of the show, thinks he is a diva. Even “sitting senators have sent requests to be on the show”. If you haven’t seen the Late Night Show With Begum Nawazish Ali , you are missing quite a “thing”. Begum Nawazish Ali, “a coquettish widow who interviews Pakistan’s glitterati and some of its top politicians”, is, in fact, Ali Saleem, Pakistan’s ground-breaking drag artist.

Begum Nawazish Ali is quite a charactor. “With fluttering eyelids and glossy lips, Begum Nawazish Ali … flirts with male guests using suggestive banter and sexual innuendo.” And as Salman Masood puts it for the International Herald Tribune, when she speaks, he’s breaking all of Islam’s taboos.

Thanks to President Pervaiz Musharraf’s Plea for Enlightened Moderation, we are being enlightened. Even Ali “owe[s] Begum Nawazish Ali’s existence … to General Musharraf”.

How cute. Enlighten me up scotty.
