Pakistan Adopting Daylight Savings Time

Written by Nauman Faridi

Just a friendly reminder that Pakistan is adopting Daylight Savings Time from Sunday, June 1, 2008.

Here is what’s going to happen:

On the night of Saturday, May 31, 2008, the Pakistan official time will advance from 11:59:59 PM PST to 01:00:00 AM (the date will change as well of course). Offset from UTC/GMT will become +6 hrs.

The daylight saving time (DST) will return to standard time (PST) on the last Sunday in August Friday, October 31, 2008. The offset will also return to UTC/GMT +5.

Here is what I suggest:

Don’t wait until the exact moment or the next morning. Change all your clocks and watches to one hour ahead before going to bed Saturday night. If you need as much sleep as I do, plan for going to bed one hour early. Go with your clocks the next morning. Don’t confuse yourself and others by referring to both the times at the same time. It’s not Musharraf or Zardari time. It’s PST or DST (or PDT, it’s not clear yet).

Oh, and remember to adjust namaz timings.

Here is some information on the Net:

  1. All about Daylight Saving Time from Wikipedia
  2. Microsoft article that tells you how to update your computer (more here too)
  3. Pakistan on TimeandDate.com. More here.
  4. Lets not forget BBC as well

If you have a link to the Government notification on this decision, please add it to the comments section. Thanks.

Update: The federal cabinet on Wednesday extended till Oct 31 the system of daylight saving time which was introduced on June 1 for three months. The clock will be moved back by one hour on Nov 1 and not on Sept 1.

Well, Pakistan must be using Daylight Saving technique to use natural resources effectively and to cope with power crisis, but a country with only 27% literacy rate (where the one who can write his name is a literate) and even confusion among the highly literates about Time change, I think, Pakistan should be doing it a bit differently.

For this, I have a suggestion, instead of changing the clock-time, just change the office/school timings. Office timings, for example, should change from 9 -> 6 to 8 -> 5. I think, this is a simple change, easily adopted and will result the same.

Its good step for energy conservation but the need of time is to generate new resources of energy and think the future responsibility.
